HISTORY
Suburban Emergency Medical Services traces its origins to 1953, when a small group of dedicated volunteers in Palmer Township came together with a single goal: to provide their neighbors with lifesaving care in moments of crisis. With limited resources but an abundance of heart, they established what was then known as the Suburban Fire and Rescue Company. From a modest station and just two ambulances, the team worked tirelessly, answering calls day and night and building a reputation rooted in trust, compassion, and service.
AROUND THE CLOCK SUPPORT
As the community grew, so did Suburban. Through the 1960s and 70s, new equipment, vehicles, and training allowed volunteers to respond faster and more effectively. By the 1980s, Suburban had become a recognized name in emergency response, blending its volunteer spirit with professional standards of care. The introduction of paid paramedics marked a major step forward, ensuring that residents had access to advanced life support 24 hours a day.
GROWING WITH COMMUNITY
In the years that followed, Suburban EMS continued to evolve, expanding into new communities, opening additional stations, and partnering with other agencies to meet the growing demand for emergency and non-emergency services. As neighboring squads closed or transitioned, Suburban EMS was requested by municipalities to ensure that no community was left without care, strengthening its role as a regional leader in emergency medical response.
STILL GOING STRONG
Today, Suburban EMS proudly serves residents across Northampton and Monroe Counties with a dedicated team of EMTs, paramedics, dispatchers, paratransit, and administrative staff. Our services have grown to include not only 9-1-1 emergency response, but also medical transportation, community event coverage, CPR and First Aid education, and public outreach programs designed to promote health and safety.
While much has changed since that small group of volunteers first rolled out in 1953, our purpose has never wavered. Suburban EMS remains deeply committed to its founding values — compassion, integrity, and service to others. Every call, every patient, every community connection reflects the same promise that began more than 70 years ago: to deliver exceptional care, when it’s needed most.
